DWI laws have gradually been getting tougher. The legal limit is now .08 in all states and there is pressure from groups like mothers against drunk driving to make it even lower.
Most states also have mandatory drivers license sanctions, stiff fines and long probationary periods. While on probation the convicted person will be required to refrained from consuming alcohol and to obtain counseling.
Second offense convictions carry mandatory jail time and community service and much longer periods for drivers license suspension or revocation. Third offences are considered felonies in many states and can carry prison sentences up to five years. Drivers license revocations are usually at least five years for a 3rd offence.
Some states make it possible for the persons car to be confiscated or at least immobilized for a period of time.
Drunk driving is a serious offence these days, dot do it. Take a taxi home instead.
